[Saba Sports News] In the cricket world, Steve Smith is an Australian batting legend, amassing over 15,000 international runs across formats. Surprisingly, Smith could have represented England due to his family background. His mother, Gillian, is English, potentially granting him dual citizenship.
During his early cricket days, Smith played club cricket for Sevenoaks Vine in the Kent league. Both Kent and Surrey were interested in him as a leg-spinner who could bat. Paul Farbrace, who later became England’s assistant coach, managed Kent’s academy and recalled Smith’s early promise.
Smith’s potential was evident, and a contract offer from Kent was on the table. However, Smith’s father, Peter, firmly insisted he play for Australia, denying the English opportunity.
“No, he’s going to play for Australia,” Smith’s father insisted.
Surrey also offered a lucrative three-year contract to Smith, shocking the young cricketer. However, Smith’s heart was set on representing Australia. In his autobiography, ‘The Journey,’ he reaffirmed his allegiance to Australia, citing a stronger connection with his homeland.
Smith made his Australia debut in 2010 and has since become a cricketing legend.
“Once the initial shock passed, it wasn’t a tough decision to turn it down. I was Australian, grew up in Australia, and wanted to play for Australia. Mum has an English accent, but my allegiance is to Australia. For me, it was always Australia. That was my home and where I wanted to play,” Smith stated during the Ashes 2023 tour.
In his early days, Surrey recognized Smith’s talent, but he returned to New South Wales. Former player Nadeem Shahid recommended him, and Smith impressed in two Second XI matches for Surrey.
In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Australia faced India in Chennai in their opening game. Smith played a vigilant knock of 35 runs off 49 balls, taking on a significant role in Australia’s performance.
