[Saba Sports News] Indian star batter Smriti Mandhana shared insights into her cricket career and the obstacles she faced, highlighting the support of her parents amidst societal pressures. She discussed this during her appearance on the quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 15,’ hosted by renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Bachchan inquired about Mandhana’s cricketing background, to which she responded, “Yes, sir. My father and brother were avid cricket enthusiasts. My dad, who couldn’t pursue cricket himself, hoped for his children to play and represent India. I started playing cricket inspired by my brother. I’m naturally right-handed but learned to bat left-handed, imitating him from behind the nets.”
Addressing her challenges, Mandhana emphasized her parents’ role in her journey, “In the early days, I often practiced with boys due to the scarcity of female cricket players. My parents played a crucial role; they protected me from negativity and allowed me the freedom to play.”
Bachchan praised this approach, lauding the modern mindset that champions equal opportunities for women. “My parents faced criticism,” Mandhana shared, “People would say, ‘If she gets tanned, no one will marry her.’ But they shielded me from these comments, focusing on letting me play.” Bachchan wrapped up, applauding the positive impact of her parents’ support.
