[Saba Sports News] The Indian men’s cricket team bagged a gold medal on their Asian Games debut.
India were up against Bangladesh in the final of the cricket event of the Asian Games 2023.
Leading India, Ruturaj Gaikwad opted to bowl first after winning the toss. While batting, Bangladesh lost early wickets as the Indian bowlers sent their top three batters packing inside first four overs.
Shahidullah Kamal and Afsar Zazai forged a brief 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket, however, as soon as the latter got dismissed by the leg-spinner, Afghanistan were again back to square one, losing another wicket in the next over.
Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib joined hands with Shahidullah and performed a resurrection act with their 60-run stand, pushing their team towards a respectable total.
But the rain came hosing down thereafter as the play had to be stopped in 18.2 overs with Afghanistan’s scoring being 112/5.
The match could not resume as the umpires decided to call it off.
By virtue of having a higer seeding, India were handed the gold medal, while Afghanistan went home with the silver.
