[Saba Sports News] Mark Jackson is poised to make a significant career move, as reported by Andrew Marchand of the New York Post on Monday.
The former ESPN broadcaster is in discussions for a broadcasting role with the New York Knicks. Jackson is being considered to step in for 78-year-old Knicks legend Walt Frazier on road broadcasts, as Frazier intends to reduce his travel commitments for the upcoming season.
Marchand also mentions that Jackson, aged 58, still has an active contract with ESPN, which may require their approval for the MSG Network position. Jackson recently parted ways with ESPN during the summer, following more than a decade of providing color commentary for their NBA broadcasts.
Jackson has strong connections with the Knicks, having been drafted by the team in 1987 and playing for them in two separate periods (1987-92 and 2001-02). He earned the Rookie of the Year title as a Knick in 1988 and made the only All-Star appearance of his career with the team in 1989.
Given that his longtime ESPN broadcast partner, Mike Breen, also serves as the play-by-play announcer for MSG Network alongside Frazier, Jackson is expected to seamlessly integrate into the role.
There were previous rumors suggesting that Jeff Van Gundy, another member of the renowned ESPN NBA trio, might join Jackson at MSG Network. However, Marchand’s report indicates that a partnership between Van Gundy and MSG Network is now considered highly unlikely.
