Sports News] Nishimoto Kenta faced criticism for time-wasting tactics during
the recently concluded Syed Modi India International 2023. Chinese Taiwanese
badminton player Chi Yu-Jen defeated the 12th-ranked Japanese player, securing
his first Super Series championship. However, Nishimoto’s behavior during the
match drew negative attention from the media. In the third game, Nishimoto
frequently found himself in trouble. He would throw himself to the ground while
attempting to save the ball, toss his racket, roll on the ground, and even hit
the ball after it hit the net. These exaggerated actions were seen as
“acrobatics” by the media and were perceived as attempts to delay
time and disrupt the opponent’s mindset in order to alter the outcome. Despite
the unnecessary time wastage, the referee did not intervene. Chi Yu-Jen emerged
as the biggest dark horse of the tournament. Despite being a newcomer, Chi
showcased his experience by defeating several seasoned players on his way to
the finals.
