[Saba Sports News] Pakistan fast-bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi came in support of his teammate Haris Rauf for his decision to opt out the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia, starting on December 14 in Canberra.
Pakistan Director of Cricket-cum head coach Mohammad Hafeez and chief selector Wahab Riaz had criticised Rauf for his refusal to play red-ball matches in Australia, doubting his commitment towards the team.
As Rauf found himself in a pickle, Shaheen spoke in his favour, stating that it should be a player’s call to decide which formats he wants to play.
“Haris was not part of the last series as well in Tests. Haris is a strength for Pakistan cricket in white-ball cricket. He will continue to be a main bowler in white-ball cricket. His impact in white-ball cricket is very high. I think it (not playing Test series in Australia) is his opinion. I think every player has to have his own opinion. It’s about the rights of the individual. I think there was a discussion with him before the tour. I think he feels he doesn’t have a big impact in red-ball cricket,” Shaheen said as quoted to the reporters after the training session on Sunday.
While Shaheen spoke highly of Rauf’s skillful bowling in white-ball cricket, it must be noted that the latter had a below-average 2023 World Cup, conceding over 500 runs in the tournament while claiming just 16 wickets in nine matches.
Pakistan will play the Test series Down Under, while Rauf will also be in Australia during the same time, representing Melbourne Stars in the nearing season of the Big Bash League.
