[Saba Sports News] As fans are waiting for the Cricket World Cup 2023 with bated breath, India captain Rohit Sharma, ahead of the marquee event, put forward his opinion on India not winning any ICC trophy since 2013.
India last won the World Cup in 2011 when MS Dhoni led the team to victory over Sri Lanka in the finals. This time, India are hosting the quadrennial tournament for the first time in last 12 years, and expectations are at an-all time high as fans expect the Men in Blue to bring an end to their ICC trophy drought.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Rohit opined that while India haven’t won an ICC trophy lately, they have been playing consistently well. He also made a comparison with the defending World Cup champions England.
“Yes, we have not won, it’s fine. I’m not a person who overthinks and puts myself in a tough place where I’m not able to make a decision. England started winning now; in 2019 they won the World Cup after so many years. It happens. Australia is the only consistent team who have won. After 2007, they won the ODI World Cup in 2015. They won the T20 World Cup in Dubai,” said Rohit.
He further expressed his disappointment on India’s empty trophy cabinet post-2013.
“Every year there is an ICC trophy now. If you don’t win it’s an unsuccessful year! People just forget what good work has happened in these 10 months. Rightly, as the Indian cricket team, we are expected to win major trophies. We are one of the top teams in the world. We have to be good at it. It has been disappointing for sure,” he added.
The ODI World Cup 2023 is all set to begin on October 5 and will conclude on November 19. Defending champions England will face 2019 runners-up New Zealand in the World Cup opener in Ahmedabad. As for the hosts, they will play their first match in Chennai against Australia on October 8.
