[Saba Sports News] David Willey, the England pace bowler, has officially retired from international cricket during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He made the announcement on his Instagram account.
Despite being a standout performer in the tournament, where he took five crucial wickets at an average of 27.20 and contributed with the bat, Willey has decided to retire from international cricket.
Willey will continue to play short-form cricket, both domestically and internationally. He has led Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast and played for the Welsh Fire in The Hundred. He is set to represent the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20 in January 2024 and might secure a spot with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming IPL season.
His international career began in May 2015, and he played a vital role in England’s white-ball cricket resurgence. He has 94 wickets in 70 ODIs and 51 wickets in 43 T20Is, with his most recent appearance in October 2022.
Willey was part of the England squad that finished as runners-up in the 2016 World T20 and earned a spot in the provisional squad for the 2019 World Cup but was ultimately omitted to accommodate the emergence of Jofra Archer.
