[Saba Sports News] Australia batter David Warner is set to retire from Test cricket in less than two weeks from now. He will play his farewell game in the format against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
With Warner ready to bid adieu to Test format, Australia is now on the hunt for his replacement. The southpaw has offered his suggestion, picking Marcus Harris as his successor.
“Look, it’s a tough one, it’s obviously up to the selectors but from my position… I feel like the person who has worked their backside off and has been there for a while in the background, I think (Harris) has been that person,” Warner said as quoted.
Warner advised the selectors to back Harris, stating that he could deliver the goods if he is given a fair run. He also talked about his batting style, emphasising it is not very different to his own.
“He’s always toured, he’s going to have that chance. He scored a hundred the other day, he missed out in a couple of other games, but he’s always been that person who is next in line. If the selectors show their faith in him, then I’m sure he’ll come out and play in the way he does.
“[Harris] is not too dissimilar to me, if he sees it in his areas, he goes for it and plays his shots. I think he’d fit well,” Warner mentioned
Harris last played a Test match in January 2022. Since making his debut in 2018, he has only featured in 14 Tests, accumulating 607 runs, including three fifties, at an average of 25.29.
The 31-year-old has not fared well in the Sheffield Shield 2023-24 so far, having scored 282 runs in nine innings. However, he made a solid mark in the practice fixture recently played between Prime Minister’s XI and Pakistan, hammering 126 runs in a mere 131 deliveries.
