[Saba Sports News] On October 21, Manchester United
released an official obituary announcing the passing of English football legend
Sir Bobby Charlton at the age of 86. The obituary highlighted that Sir Charlton
was the final surviving player from the tragic “Munich Air Disaster.”
The Munich Air Disaster occurred on February 6, 1958, when Manchester United
were returning to the UK from a European match. The plane, named “Lord
Polly” and operated by British European Airways, made a stop in Munich for
refuelling. However, during takeoff, the aircraft encountered difficulties due
to ice and snow on the runway, causing it to lose control. The plane veered off
the runway, collided with a building, and subsequently exploded. Tragically, 23
out of the 44 people on board lost their lives, including seven Manchester
United players. Sir Bobby Charlton was the last surviving player from that
fateful event.
