[Saba Sports News] The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced
significant adjustments to the world points system for the Olympics, World
Championships, and year-end finals in the upcoming season. Following the
conclusion of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the points awarded to the champions of
the Olympic and World Championships will increase from 13,000 points to 14,500
points, while the runners-up will receive 12,500 points, up from 11,000 points.
The points for the champions of the year-end finals will rise from 12,000
points to 14,000 points, and the runners-up will receive 12,000 points.
Additionally, if the prize money for Super 1000 series events surpasses a
certain threshold, players will be able to obtain additional world ranking
points. For instance, the China Open, which has a total prize money exceeding
$2 million, will offer championship points of 13,500, surpassing the
championship points of the other three Super 1000 tournaments (All England,
Indonesia Open, Malaysian Open) by 1,500 points. Some fans have expressed their
opinion that the BWF’s approach to increasing the influence of badminton
involves compelling high-ranking players to participate in numerous
competitions, creating a complex ranking system that doesn’t consider the
athletes’ interests. They believe it to be a wasteful practice that is not
beneficial for the long-term development of badminton. Suggestions have been
made for the Badminton World Federation to consider adopting a tennis-like
points system for calculating world rankings.
