[Saba Sports News] During the Premier League
match between Manchester United and West Ham last weekend, Manchester United
observed a moment of silence. This tribute was held because it coincided with
the 66th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. In an interview with the
media, Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag expressed his belief that this
commemoration reflects the club’s legacy and the essence of Manchester United’s
identity. He highlighted the club’s ability to overcome significant setbacks
and endure through difficult circumstances with the determination of young
players. The Munich air disaster occurred in 1958 when Manchester United was
returning from the quarter-finals of the European Cup and preparing to fly back
to England. However, the plane failed to achieve the necessary takeoff speed,
overshot the runway, and crashed. The tragic incident claimed the lives of 23
individuals, including eight players, three staff members, journalists, and
fans. This catastrophe had a profound impact on Manchester United, as it
resulted in the loss of more than half of their main team. The team was unable
to compete in the domestic league and European Cup championships that year.
