[Saba Sports News] In a touching farewell to veteran Mumbai pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, the domestic powerhouse secured their 42nd Ranji Trophy title with a commanding 169-run victory over Vidarbha. Kulkarni, who had announced his retirement before the final, received a grand send-off from his teammates after clinching the last wicket to seal the historic win at Wankhede Stadium.
Ending his illustrious 16-year career on a high note, the 35-year-old played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s triumph. Emotions ran high as Kulkarni was lifted on his teammates’ shoulders, clutching the trophy, with tears of joy streaming down his face.
The heartfelt moments continued as Mumbai stars Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur, and Shams Mulani extended their congratulations and well-wishes to Kulkarni in Marathi, acknowledging his remarkable journey and wishing him success in his future endeavors beyond cricket.
Kulkarni’s farewell match unfolded dramatically. With Vidarbha nine wickets down in pursuit of 538, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane entrusted him with the ball for one last time. Kulkarni delivered, shattering the stumps to dismiss Umesh Yadav and igniting jubilant celebrations.
“I wanted to finish on a high, and I’m thrilled we won the Ranji Trophy. Though I’ve retired from playing, I aim to contribute to cricket in other ways,” Kulkarni expressed, overwhelmed by the occasion.
Throughout his career spanning over 200 games for Mumbai across formats, Kulkarni claimed 281 first-class wickets, including 15 five-wicket hauls. Despite being limited to just 14 international caps for India, he left an indelible mark on Mumbai cricket, contributing to five Ranji Trophy titles.
