[Saba Sports News] Ex-Indian skipper Kapil Dev commended the BCCI for its firm stance on prioritizing first-class cricket, affecting players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, who were dropped from the central contracts after reportedly avoiding Ranji Trophy matches. He highlighted the board’s commitment to the country’s cricketing welfare, even if it poses challenges for individual players, emphasizing the nation’s interest above all.
The exclusion of Iyer and Kishan from the contract list, previously under Grade B and C, sparked discussions. Kapil Dev praised the board’s emphasis on domestic cricket’s significance, suggesting that the players’ discomfort is secondary to national interests.
“I am so happy that the cricket board has taken a step forward for first-class cricket. The boys must play that, it’s good for the country. Whatever is good for the country, I feel happy about that. Yes, few players will suffer…kuch ko takleef hogi…hone do, lekin desh se badhkar koi nahi hai. Well done.,” Dev shared.
His 1983 World Cup teammate, Madan Lal, supported this view, insisting on adherence to BCCI mandates for first-class cricket participation, emphasizing the game’s supremacy over individual players. He credited the BCCI for ensuring players do not sideline domestic cricket, often overshadowed by the IPL’s allure. Lal advocated for strict adherence to this policy, implying that disciplinary actions are necessary to maintain the sport’s integrity and set a precedent.
“If the BCCI told them to play first-class cricket, they should have gone and played. No one is bigger than the game. The BCCI should be given the credit as they are making it mandatory to play first-class cricket. Most of the players nowadays are taking first-class cricket for granted because of the IPL,” Lal stated. “Definitely, the BCCI made a rule that every player should go and play first-class cricket. So if you don’t follow the rules, then they have to take some action and set an example for others.”
While Iyer prepares for the Ranji Trophy 2024 semifinals and Kishan participates in the DY Patil T20 Cup, the cricket community continues to back the BCCI’s unwavering focus on strengthening first-class cricket, acknowledging its long-term benefits for Indian cricket.
