[Saba Sports News] The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to launch a multi-day women’s cricket tournament in Pune, starting March 29. This event, coming right after the Women’s Premier League (WPL) ends on March 17, will see six zonal teams – East, West, North, South, Central, and Northeast – compete over five matches.
The tournament will begin with two quarterfinals on March 29-31, followed by semifinals on April 5-7, and culminate in a final from April 9-11, although the teams directly entering the semifinals have yet to be announced.
This three-day format tournament is more than just a competition; it’s a critical step for the BCCI to gauge the engagement of women cricketers in longer-format domestic games, paralleling the emphasis they place on men’s participation in domestic cricket like the Ranji Trophy.
It also aims to bolster the women’s game by providing a platform for red-ball cricket, aligning with the recent increase in women’s Test matches, thereby nurturing the players’ skills in the longer format of the game.
