[Saba Sports News] Zach Edey experienced a frightening moment during Thursday’s Summer League game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Memphis Grizzlies rookie big man sprained his right ankle in the second quarter while contesting a shot. Edey jumped to block a floater by New Orleans’ Jordan Ford and landed on Ford’s foot.
Here is the video of the nasty ankle turn, which forced Edey to exit the game. He managed to walk off the court under his own power, but for a 7-foot-4, 300-pound player, that was a significant amount of force on his ankle. Edey did not return to the game (which the Grizzlies won 88-77).
The 22-year-old, a two-time National College Player of the Year, was drafted No. 9 overall by the Grizzlies last month. He had injured his left ankle during Memphis’ Summer League opener against the Utah Jazz on July 8, causing him to miss five games. Thursday marked his first game back, only for him to injure his other ankle.
Edey had previously sparked jokes about his awkward running form. Now, after suffering injuries to both ankles in Summer League, the Grizzlies will need to monitor him closely as he begins his rookie year.
