[Saba Sports News] Badminton, being a competitive
sport that tests agility and reaction, is beloved by fans. However, as with any
competitive sport, there is always a certain risk of injury. Some fans have
raised a question: Who is responsible if a badminton player sustains an injury?
Recently, the Wangcheng District Court in Changsha City, Hunan Province, China,
announced a case related to badminton. Sun, a physical education teacher at a
middle school, and Ye participated in a self-organized badminton game in a
gymnasium. During a doubles match, Sun and Ye were standing very close to the
net. Sun hit a shot in front of the net, and Ye made a diving action to return
the shot, accidentally hitting Sun’s left eye with the badminton shuttlecock.
Sun sought medical treatment, incurring $3,000 in expenses, and claimed that
Ye’s actions were grossly negligent, warranting compensation. After the trial,
the court determined that Sun and Ye voluntarily participated in a badminton
activity organized by others. There was no evidence to prove that Ye
intentionally violated the rules of badminton or acted with gross negligence.
The court found no clear violation of the rules of the game or deliberate
intent, and therefore, Sun’s compensation request was not supported. Some fans
suggested that in daily practice and competition, all players should wear
goggles as badminton is known for eye injuries.
