[Saba Sports News] The Thomas Cup is a prestigious
international men’s team badminton tournament. It was established by British
badminton player George Thomas and held for the first time in the United
Kingdom in 1948. The tournament is named after Thomas, who donated 3,000 pounds
to create a 70-centimeter-high trophy as the prize for the champion team. The
Thomas Cup is a mobile cup that is held by the winning team until the next
competition. It has been held 32 times since its inception. The Uber Cup, on
the other hand, is the highest-level women’s team badminton competition in the
world. It was initiated and promoted by Betty Uber, a renowned British
badminton player. In 1956, she donated the Memorial Cup, which is now known as
the Uber Cup, to the International Badminton Federation. The Uber Cup trophy
stands at 18 inches tall and features a globe-like body with a badminton-like
model on the top. The model depicts a female athlete holding a racket.
Previously, the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup were held every three years.
However, since 1984, both tournaments have been held simultaneously and in the
same location. They occur every two years and follow a five-game system.
