[Saba Sports News] Rohit Sharma is all set to lead Team India for the very first time in an ODI World Cup, starting tomorrow.
On the eve of the tournament-opener, as a ritual, all the captains of each team faced the press. The event took place in Ahmedabad, where all 10 captains came together on the stage to respond to the media’s questions.
As is the convention before every World Cup, each side has to play two warm-up matches. Unfortunately, India was the only team, whose both practice games against England and Netherlands in Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram respectively got abandoned due to rain.
On being asked about this, Rohit revealed that he was happy and satisfied that the matches got called off as the players got the extra rest that they needed before heading into the hectic 45-day competition.
Indian players have been playing continuous matches from the last month or so, featuring in the Asia Cup 2023 and Australia ODI series without much break.
“We were happy to get those days off. We have been playing a lot of cricket lately. We played in the Asia Cup and then against Australia. So that gives us an understanding of where everyone is,” said Rohit.
India will face Australia in their first World Cup fixture on October 8 in Chennai, followed by matches against Afghanistan and Pakistan on October 11 and 14 in Delhi and Ahmedabad respectively.
