[Saba Sports News] The 2024 IPL auction is generating excitement, particularly due to the previous season’s introduction of the Impact Player rule. This rule lets teams substitute a player who can bowl up to four overs, regardless of the original player’s overs bowled.
Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer criticized this rule for reducing all-rounders’ need to bowl, suggesting its removal for the benefit of Indian cricket. He voiced his concerns on Twitter.
“I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it’s not encouraging the all rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket. Thoughts?”
The Impact Player rule has significantly altered team strategies. Teams name four substitutes at the toss, selecting one as their Impact Player, who can be nominated at various points in the match.
There are restrictions on when the bowling team can make this substitution, and once replaced, the original player can’t return to the game. The rule mandates the Impact Player to be Indian unless the team starts with less than four overseas players. The rule’s influence is expected to be a key factor in the upcoming auctions and matches.
