[Saba Sports News] Monday’s contract extension deadline will pass without a new deal for Jonathan Kuminga.
According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors and Kuminga have not reached an agreement on an extension before the deadline. As a 2021 draftee, Kuminga was eligible for a preseason extension, but talks stalled.
The 22-year-old forward emerged last season, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while playing strong defense. He’s projected to start this season alongside Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green.
However, maturity concerns, including a reported conflict with head coach Steve Kerr over playing time and questions about his work ethic, may have influenced the Warriors’ decision not to improve their offer beyond “$30ish million per year.”
With no extension in place, Kuminga will become a restricted free agent next summer, allowing him to sign offer sheets with other teams, which the Warriors can match. He could also take a one-year qualifying offer for 2025-26 and become an unrestricted free agent the following year. Kuminga remains eligible for trade through February’s deadline.
While the Warriors extended another young player before Monday, Kuminga’s future with the team remains uncertain.
