[Saba Sports News] Former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev expressed disappointment as he revealed that he did not receive an invitation to attend the final of the ODI World Cup 2023.
Despite initial media reports indicating that invitations were extended to all previous ODI World Cup-winning captains by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Kapil clarified that he was not included in the list to witness the final match live from the Narendra Modi Stadium, scheduled between India and Australia on Sunday.
In an interview, Kapil stated, “I wasn’t invited there. They didn’t call me so I did not go. As simple as that. I wanted the whole ’83 team to be there with me but I guess due to the fact that it’s such a big event and people are so busy handling responsibilities, sometimes they forget.”
Kapil remains an integral figure in the cricket history, leading India to its maiden World Cup victory in 1983, defeating the West Indies by 43 runs in the final at Lord’s.
Interestingly, Kapil was not the sole notable absentee, as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain who led India to World Cup glory in 2011, also chose not to attend the final in Ahmedabad. Dhoni, a revered figure in Indian cricket, played a pivotal role in guiding the team to victory in the 2011 World Cup edition, defeating Sri Lanka in the final at the Wankhede Stadium by six wickets.
