[Saba Sports News] The 2023 season of F1 has come to an end, with Max
Verstappen crowned as the champion driver and Red Bull Racing winning the team
championship. Throughout this year’s F1 races, there has been a significant
performance gap between the Red Bull RB19 car and those of other teams. In
order to change Red Bull’s dominant position, the International Automobile Federation
(FIA) has announced new regulations for the 2026 F1 season, which will bring
about a major adjustment in the energy landscape. According to the new
regulations, the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit-Heat) that has been a part of the
F1 hybrid powertrain system for nearly a decade will be eliminated. The FIA
recognizes that the MGU-H is unlikely to become a trend in automotive
development. Additionally, by directly removing the MGU-H, the teams can reduce
their research and manufacturing costs. The MGU-H, known to fans as the heat
recovery system, is a system connected to the engine’s turbocharger. It
converts the thermal energy from the exhaust gases into electrical energy as
the gases drive the rotating turbine. When the engine’s speed decreases and the
energy from exhaust gases reduces, the MGU-H utilizes electrical energy to
drive the turbocharger, reducing turbo lag and keeping the engine operating at
its optimal state. Now that the MGU-H is gone, it remains to be seen whether
the future F1 cars’ power performance will decline.
