[Saba Sports News] Bangladesh’s prominent opener Tamim Iqbal has communicated to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) his decision not to return to international cricket in 2024. This decision came to light following a detailed discussion with BCB officials, where the 34-year-old expressed his intent to continue his break from the national team indefinitely. Although he had previously announced his retirement in July last year, he reconsidered after an appeal from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tamim, whose last appearances were in an ODI against New Zealand in September 2023 and a Test against Ireland in April 2023, has opted out of Test cricket citing fitness issues but hints at a possible ODI return in the future. His absence from the World Cup squad was notable, following alleged disagreements with teammate Shakib Al Hasan.
His stance emerged from extensive discussions with BCB, indicating his future participation might be limited to ODIs, depending on his fitness and the resolution of team-related concerns he has voiced. The BCB acknowledged his concerns, emphasizing the need for a quick resolution, with officials expressing the importance of prioritizing the well-being of Bangladesh cricket. The dialogue around Tamim’s conditions for return and his discussions with the BCB president remains a focal point, underscoring his significant impact and the high regard for his contributions to the team.
