[Saba Sports News] Mitchell Johnson, a former Australian fast bowler, recently made headlines with his harsh criticism of seasoned batsman David Warner.
He questioned the fanfare surrounding Warner’s departure from Test cricket, especially after Warner’s involvement in a 2018 ball-tampering incident. This provoked varied reactions, including a response from Warner’s wife, Candice. She appreciated the widespread support for David, emphasizing his good character and the family’s happiness to be together before Christmas.
“We’re doing well. David’s home. He’s been away for three months, so to have him home now and be together as a family in the lead-up to Christmas is always special. It’s really lovely for David to have that support, but he’s a good human being, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters,” Candice shared.
James Erskine, David Warner’s manager, commented on Johnson’s statements, suggesting that grabbing headlines is easy. He defended Warner’s inclusion in Australia’s Test team, pointing out that despite Warner’s form struggles, the alternatives for opening batsmen are not clearly superior.
“Let me tell you, anyone can get a headline. The fact is that [Warner’s selection] is just logical. The three [replacement] candidates will be [Matthew] Renshaw, [Cameron] Bancroft, who has played pretty well in the Sheffield Shield, and [Marcus] Harris. Now they’ve all had spells opening the batting for Australia,” Erskine said.
David Warner himself has expressed a desire to retire from Test cricket after the upcoming series against Pakistan, ideally at his home ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia and Pakistan are set to compete in a three-match Test series, beginning at Perth’s Optus Stadium on December 14.
