[Saba Sports News] Bangladesh’s renowned all-rounder, Shakib al Hasan, has been diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye, as confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on January 24. The 36-year-old sought advice from ophthalmologists both in Bangladesh and internationally after experiencing eye issues. Subsequent assessments revealed that he has Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) in his left eye. Despite this diagnosis, Shakib is expected to continue his participation in the Bangladesh Premier League, playing for Rangpur Riders against Khulna Tigers on January 26.
Dr. Debashis Chowdhury, a Senior Physician at the BCB, explained that Shakib has been experiencing subtle problems with his left eye. After thorough consultations and evaluations, a conservative treatment approach has been chosen to manage his condition. Extrafoveal CSR is known to cause visual disturbances, but the medical team is optimistic about managing it effectively without invasive procedures.
Shakib recently returned to professional cricket in a match between Rangpur and Fortune Barishal, after a two-month hiatus due to a finger injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup. In this match, his performance was mixed; he scored only 2 runs but took 2 wickets for 16 runs in four overs. Despite his efforts, Rangpur lost the match by five wickets.
After the game, Rangpur’s captain Nurul Hasan disclosed Shakib’s ongoing struggle with his eyesight, noting that he has been regularly consulting doctors to monitor the condition. Hasan emphasized the importance of medical guidance in understanding the severity and progression of Shakib’s eye issue.
