[Saba Sports News] Despite their dominant performance throughout the tournament, Delhi Capitals couldn’t deliver in the WPL final, succumbing to Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight wickets. The Capitals had a promising start with Shafali Varma and Meg Lanning putting together a 64-run opening stand, with Shafali making a swift 44 off 27 balls.
Yet, following her dismissal, Delhi’s innings crumbled, ultimately setting a modest total of 113. RCB’s Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil devastated the middle order, claiming three and four wickets, respectively. In the chase, despite Delhi’s efforts, Ellyse Perry and Smriti Mandhana guided RCB to a comfortable victory.
The defeat marked Delhi’s second consecutive final loss, leaving the team visibly emotional. Reflecting on the loss, Shafali Varma shared her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the team’s accomplishments and the support they’ve received, while promising to strive harder in the next season.
She expressed gratitude towards everyone associated with the team and conveyed a resolve to make an even stronger comeback in the next WPL edition.
“Tough night yesterday, and even tougher morning today. It will take a while to realise how much we have achieved as a team, but really proud to be part of it. Grateful for all the support we have received over the last few months. Congratulations to everyone at RCB,” Shafali tweeted. “A big thank you to the owners, the staff, the support staff and you fans who helped us to a second straight final. Teesri baar aur zyaada koshish karenge.”
The RCB camp, meanwhile, celebrated their victory, with Indian cricket star Virat Kohli extending his congratulations through a video call.
