[Saba Sports News] France seems to have reignited its Olympic basketball campaign by benching Rudy Gobert, and social media is buzzing about it.
Gobert played just five minutes in France’s semifinal win over Germany, following a mere four minutes in their upset victory over Canada in the quarterfinals. With Gobert sidelined, France turned to players like Guerschon Yabusele and Isaia Cordinier to play a faster, more spaced-out game.
Gobert’s critics quickly jumped on the situation. Although Gobert had previously cited an injury as the reason for his limited minutes, his coach denied this.
Gobert, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is known for his exceptional paint defense. However, his skill set may not be the best fit for a French team that can rely on Victor Wembanyama, who offers similar defensive prowess with added offensive versatility. While Gobert’s role might change against tougher opponents like the USA or Serbia in the final, it wouldn’t be surprising if France sticks with what’s been working.
