[Saba Sports News] Desperate times may call for desperate measures for the Detroit Pistons.
This week, the Pistons decided on a new president of basketball operations, a role that had been vacant for years with GM Troy Weaver handling the front office. Now, the team has brought in a new lead executive.
Following this news, James L. Edwards III and Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Pistons owner Tom Gores is considering a drastic move with head coach Monty Williams. Gores is reportedly willing to fire Williams and absorb the remaining $60 million on his contract if the new president prefers to hire a different head coach.
Williams, a former NBA Coach of the Year, was hired by the Pistons last offseason with a record-breaking six-year, $78.5 million contract that could reach nine figures with incentives. However, the Pistons finished with an NBA-worst 14-68 record this season, the worst in franchise history. Despite dealing with a mismatched roster and numerous injuries, Williams’ poor decisions also contributed to the team’s struggles.
Firing Williams so soon into his massive contract would be a significant embarrassment for the Pistons. Nonetheless, Gores, one of the NBA’s wealthiest owners with a reported net worth of $9.1 billion, may be willing to endure the setback.
