[Saba Sports News] This week, the Philadelphia 76ers bid farewell to not one but two bearded shooting guards. The long-anticipated James Harden trade was finally executed after months of speculation. You can find the complete trade details here.
However, this trade resulted in a roster imbalance for Philadelphia, leading to the departure of veteran Danny Green. The three-time NBA champion was waived by the Sixers to create room for the incoming players. Notably, Green had previously agreed to a $300k pay cut to assist the team with tax-related matters, as reported by Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. The Sixers had restructured his contract before the season began.
In a recent episode of the “Inside the Green Room” podcast, Green shared his experience when Sixers president Daryl Morey informed him of the waiver. Morey’s call came at around 2:30 in the morning, just minutes after news of the trade had broken.
Green recounted, “This happened as I was almost finished unpacking all my belongings. We had moved in just a week ago, and my family—my wife, baby, and dogs—had joined me a week ago. So, we had just started to settle into our new home for about seven days. And now, it’s like, ‘You’ve got to figure it out.'”
Green had signed a one-year, $2.7 million contract with the Sixers in early September, even offering them a discount. Nonetheless, he was released from the team just as he was settling into the city.
The Sixers still have the option to bring Green back later in the season, but they would need to make room for him on the roster once again.
Furthermore, reports suggest that Philadelphia is eyeing two star guards to potentially fill the void left by Harden, leaving the Sixers’ roster situation in a state of uncertainty.
