[Saba Sports News] Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez has set an unexpected goal for Ben Simmons: to shoot the ball more.
Following Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Pistons, Fernandez told reporters that Simmons, who took just four shots during the game, should aim for at least 10 attempts per game. “I want him to shoot more,” said Fernandez, per Erik Slater of ClutchPoints. “He’s gotta find a way to get there. He hasn’t gotten there, but I know he can … Those attempts need to go up… He’s more than capable.”
This is a challenge for Simmons, who is known for his passivity on offense and has averaged only 5.3 shots per game over his time in Brooklyn. However, back in his days with the Philadelphia 76ers, Simmons did average double-digit shot attempts, making the goal achievable.
More offensive aggression from Simmons could help the Nets, especially with his ability to drive to the basket. However, with his well-documented struggles from the perimeter—only six career three-pointers made and no attempts since February 2023—it’s unlikely the team will ask him to extend his range anytime soon.
