[Saba Sports News] Mike Hesson, the former Director of Cricket at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has left the franchise. Notably, Hesson has taken up the role of Head Coach for Islamabad United, a two-time champion franchise in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Azhar Mahmood previously held this position.
Hesson spent four years with RCB but was removed from his position in August. Prior to this, the 49-year-old had coached international teams such as Kenya and New Zealand. He joined RCB as the Director of Cricket Operations just before the 2019 IPL season. Despite his tenure with the Bengaluru-based franchise, RCB didn’t achieve much success, continuing their trophy drought in the lucrative league.
Speaking about joining Islamabad United, Hesson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am delighted to be part of the PSL franchise. The professional, modern, and mindful approach associated with the franchise resonates strongly with me. I am also impressed with United’s strategy, which is built around the principles of Excellence, Empowerment, Education, and Environment. I look forward to working with the talented players and staff to build a successful team and provide exciting cricket for the fans.”
Islamabad United owner Ali Naqvi praised Hesson, saying, “Mike is very strategic and analytical in his approach, with proven skills in creating new and modern playing methods, as demonstrated during his time with the New Zealand team. He is also an excellent people manager.”
It’s worth noting that the 2024 edition of Pakistan’s premier T20 tournament is scheduled to commence two months into the year and will run for approximately six weeks.
