[Saba Sports News] The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Mohsin Naqvi as its chairman for a three-year term, following an election at Lahore’s National Cricket Academy. Announced on February 6, Naqvi was chosen without opposition as the PCB’s 37th chairman.
Serving concurrently as Punjab’s interim Chief Minister, Naqvi expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, aiming to elevate cricket standards and professionalize its administration in Pakistan. His remarks to ESPNcricinfo highlighted his gratitude and commitment to the role.
Despite being new to cricket administration, Naqvi’s appointment comes after the PCB lacked a permanent chairman since December 2022, after Ramiz Raja was removed. Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf briefly filled the position thereafter. Notably, Naqvi, a 45-year-old media mogul with a background at CNN and currently heading 24 News in Pakistan, takes the helm with no prior cricket playing or administrative experience, similar to some of his predecessors.
Naqvi’s first major task as chairman involves overseeing the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season starting February 17. His tenure as interim Chief Minister, a role assumed in January 2023 amid delayed national elections, is expected to be short-lived, adhering to Pakistani law limiting such interim appointments to three months.
