[Saba Sports News] During a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Magic Johnson shared a pivotal moment in NBA history: a coin flip during the 1979 NBA Draft that shaped the futures of both the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.
The flip decided whether Magic would play for the Bulls or Lakers, and the Lakers’ victory led to Johnson’s selection, setting the stage for one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.
Had the Bulls won, Magic could have ended up in Chicago, potentially altering the course of the league. Without Magic in LA, the Lakers’ iconic rivalry with Larry Bird’s Celtics might not have developed, and the Bulls’ future, including drafting Michael Jordan in 1984, could have played out differently.
Reflecting on the outcome, Magic said, “It worked out—no Michael in Chicago, no Magic in LA.”
