[Saba Sports News] After losing Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency this summer, the New York Knicks are exploring options to strengthen their center position.
Ian Begley of SportsNet New York reported that the Knicks have shown interest in Atlanta Hawks’ Clint Capela as a potential trade target. The Knicks are looking for another center to either replace Mitchell Robinson as the starter or to share the role with him.
Capela, 30, is a solid starting center who led the NBA in rebounding in the 2020-21 season and has averaged a double-double for seven consecutive seasons (with 11.5 points and 10.6 rebounds last year).
He is known for blocking shots and being a low-usage lob threat, making him a good fit for a Jalen Brunson-led offense.
Although Robinson offers similar skills and is younger and taller, Capela has been more durable. Capela is entering the final year of his contract at $22.3 million, making him a viable trade candidate for an Atlanta team that recently traded Dejounte Murray.
The Knicks are seeking a strong center after losing Hartenstein to the Oklahoma City Thunder. While they have been linked to a trade for a young recent first-round pick, Capela on an expiring contract may be a more practical option.
