[Saba Sports News] The Paris Olympics is
undoubtedly the most significant event in the world of badminton this year, and
renowned players from all over the world are actively preparing for the
competition. Recent reports from overseas media suggest that the International
Badminton Federation is considering a policy to issue a wild card for the
badminton event at the Paris Olympic Games, allowing exceptional players and
influential players to participate. It is anticipated that Japanese badminton
star and former world No. 1, Kento Momota, will be the fortunate recipient of
this new rule. Data shows that Momota has won 11 tour championships in a single
season, surpassing Lee Chong Wei’s record of 10 championships. He held the top
spot in men’s singles badminton rankings for a considerable period from 2018 to
2020. Unfortunately, Momota suffered a severe car accident in January 2020
while en route to Kuala Lumpur Airport after winning the Malaysian Masters. His
recovery took time, and he struggled with his form until November 2023 when he
finally clinched the Korean Badminton Masters title, ending a two-year
championship drought since 2021. Considering the current Olympic points, it may
be challenging for Momota to qualify directly for the Olympics. However, given
his influence in the sport, the International Badminton Federation is
contemplating the wild card policy.
