[Saba Sports] Kemba Walker’s NBA journey began with the Charlotte Bobcats as the ninth pick in the 2011 draft, chosen by none other than Michael Jordan, who became the team’s majority owner in 2010.
Speaking on *Best in Class*, Walker reflected on the honor of being handpicked by one of the game’s greats.
“Being supported by MJ? It’s unmatched,” Walker said. “Everyone told me, ‘You’re MJ’s pick, he saw your championship and competitiveness.’ That pushed me to work hard and live up to his trust in me.”
Over eight seasons with the Bobcats/Hornets, Walker became their all-time leading scorer, securing three All-Star spots and an All-NBA Third Team selection in 2019. Now a player enhancement coach for the Hornets, Walker recalled how he saw Jordan as a “big brother,” crediting him for invaluable career support.
Their close bond went beyond the court. Walker humorously shared that he learned his lesson after gambling with Jordan in Monaco: “One thing I learned—I ain’t gambling with him again. He’s too intense!”
Reflecting on their time together, it’s clear Jordan’s decision to draft Walker was a rare win for the Hornets. Although they didn’t achieve playoff success, Walker’s legacy with the team and his unique relationship with MJ are unforgettable.
