[Saba Sports News] Retaining a star player in today’s NBA is no easy task. Warm climates, bigger markets, or stronger rosters can lure away key players, and the new CBA has made it even harder to hold onto talent. But Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum seems eager to stay put for the long haul.
This summer, the five-time All-Star inked a record-breaking five-year extension worth up to $314 million, keeping him in Boston into his thirties. But it’s not just the money that has him committed to the Celtics, as Tatum shared with Marc J. Spears of Andscape.
“I was drafted in 2017… My son was born here, I bought my first car here,” Tatum reflected. “I love the relationships I’ve built within the organization, from the front office to the ball boys who do our laundry. I can’t imagine starting over somewhere else.”
Tatum has made Boston home for his family, creating deep roots in a city that has embraced him since he arrived.
“There are kids in Boston who will remember growing up watching me play at the Garden and win championships,” he said. “In a sports town like Boston, that’s special.”
Tatum is hungry for more success after helping the Celtics secure their 18th banner last season. Inspired by legends like Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, Tatum wants to leave a lasting legacy.
“With the championship, I’m part of that special history,” he said. “But hopefully, it’s not just one.”
With a stacked roster, the Celtics are primed for another title run, but the road won’t be easy. Eastern Conference rivals like the Knicks and 76ers have bolstered their teams, making the path to back-to-back titles a significant challenge. Still, Tatum knows adding another ring is key to cementing his place among Celtics legends like Larry Bird, who captured multiple championships decades ago.
“I’m grateful for everything with the Celtics,” Tatum said. “I know I’ve played a small part in building the legacy here.”
That journey continues Tuesday night when the Celtics open the 2024-25 season against the Knicks.
