[Saba Sports News] Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan is venturing into a new chapter, this time in politics, as he prepares to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Berhampore as a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate. This announcement was made by TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, who unveiled the party’s candidates for West Bengal’s 42 seats. Yusuf is set to run in a constituency traditionally dominated by the Congress, especially by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a five-time Lok Sabha member from this seat, who is expected to be his main competitor.
Irfan Pathan, Yusuf’s brother, expressed his support and confidence in Yusuf’s potential impact on politics, highlighting his history of kindness and service.
“Your patience, kindness, and service to the needy, even without an official position, can be easily noticed. I am confident that once you step into a political role, you will truly make a difference in the daily lives of people.”
The TMC has refreshed its candidate slate, replacing eight incumbents with new faces, including Yusuf and others, aiming to bring a mix of experience and fresh energy to the fray. They’ve also focused on gender representation by fielding 12 women candidates.
The campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was launched with a high-spirited rally, where Mamata Banerjee reiterated her critique of the central government’s financial policies towards West Bengal. With Yusuf Pathan’s transition from cricket to politics, attention is now riveted on Berhampore, anticipating how this notable entrant will influence the political landscape.
