[Saba Sports News] San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is stepping away from the team indefinitely due to a health issue.
Popovich missed Saturday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, with the team citing that the 75-year-old wasn’t feeling well. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson filled in for him.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the health issue will keep Popovich away from the Spurs for an indefinite period, with Johnson taking over as interim head coach.
Popovich, who became the league’s oldest head coach just before his 72nd birthday, has led the Spurs since 1996, securing five championships and the most wins in NBA history with 1,390.
The timeline for Popovich’s return is unclear, but the Spurs have confirmed he will not be traveling for their upcoming games against the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets.
