[Saba Sports News] During the San Antonio Spurs’ recent game against the LA Clippers, coach Gregg Popovich took a stand against the home crowd’s disrespect towards Kawhi Leonard.
Leonard, who played for the Spurs from 2011-2018, faced loud boos every time he touched the ball. Popovich, upset by the behavior, interrupted Leonard’s free-throw attempt to address the crowd over the PA system, urging them to stop booing and show class.
Despite his plea, the booing intensified. Spurs fans haven’t forgiven Leonard for forcing a move away from the team following a dispute over his injury. However, Popovich, who has previously called for respect for Leonard, highlighted his significant contributions to the Spurs, including leading them to the 2014 NBA title and being Finals MVP.
Leonard’s development into a top player also happened under Popovich’s guidance, making the coach particularly protective of his former player’s legacy.
