[Saba Sports News] Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis is changing his jersey number to honor his father.
The Kings announced on Friday that Sabonis will wear No. 11 next season. Sabonis had worn this number for much of his career as a tribute to his Hall of Fame father, Arvydas. He had been wearing No. 10 with the Kings because No. 11 was retired in honor of Bob Davies.
However, Davies’ children have granted Sabonis permission to wear the number despite its retired status. Sabonis previously wore No. 11 at Gonzaga and with the Indiana Pacers. He switched to No. 10 when he joined the Kings but will revert to No. 11 next season.
This gesture from the Davies family is notable, as the number has been retired since 1990.
The change follows another strong season for Sabonis, who averaged 19.4 points and 13.7 rebounds per game while playing all 82 games, although the Kings once again fell short in the playoffs.
