[Saba Sports News] Forward DeMar DeRozan, eligible for a veteran extension until June 30 before becoming an unrestricted free agent, has expressed a strong desire to stay with the Chicago Bulls. In an interview with K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, DeRozan affirmed, “This is where I want to be. I love ownership, the city, the franchise, the front office, and the staff. It’s a place that motivates me to see everyone experience winning again.”
Throughout the season, DeRozan has repeatedly voiced his intention to remain in Chicago, and the feeling is reportedly mutual. However, no new deal has been finalized, leaving his future uncertain. Johnson notes that DeRozan has performed exceptionally under his current three-year, $81.9 million contract, which he signed during a sign-and-trade with the Spurs.
Over the past three seasons, the 34-year-old has averaged 25.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, contributing significantly to the team with his durability and clutch performances.
Despite his individual success, the Bulls have struggled as a team, especially following teammate Lonzo Ball’s career setbacks due to knee surgeries. After a playoff exit in 2022 and a play-in tournament loss in 2023, Chicago is headed for another play-in spot in 2024.
DeRozan aspires to bring back the high-energy atmosphere the team enjoyed early in the 2021-22 season and is clear about his commitment: “I don’t want to go anywhere… They know it. Everybody knows my stance. I lay it down from this perspective: I want to come back. Everybody else figure out what you need to figure out. And that’s just how I look at it so I don’t stress or worry about what’s what. I made it clear this is where I want to be. The powers that be just need to figure out what needs to happen. Everybody knows my mindset.”
