[Saba Sports News] After being dismissed as the Lakers’ head coach, Darvin Ham returned to his old team as an assistant coach. Although there are no immediate plans for him to replace the current head coach, it is believed he accepted the job anticipating that Doc Rivers’ tenure may be nearing its end.
NBA insider Gery Woelfel reported, “Sources say Giannis Antetokounmpo had major input in Ham’s hiring. Those same sources contend Ham, who had offers from several teams, took the Bucks job with the assumption he’ll eventually succeed Doc Rivers.”
Ham was previously the head assistant under former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer and developed a close relationship with Giannis during their 2021 championship run. Hired by the Lakers in June 2022, Ham initially succeeded in unifying the team and reached the Western Conference Finals last season. However, the following season saw struggles, leading to his dismissal after criticism from players and fans, including Anthony Davis.
The Lakers are currently without a head coach and under pressure to decide before free agency starts on July 1. Ham, now 50, sees a growth opportunity with the Bucks despite accepting a demotion. Doc Rivers, currently leading the team, faces doubts after a first-round elimination, with his postseason track record casting a shadow over his tenure.
If the Bucks struggle or face another early exit, Rivers’ job could be in jeopardy, positioning Ham as his likely successor. With his defensive focus, experience with LeBron, and relationship with Giannis, Ham could be an ideal fit for the Bucks. As an assistant, Ham will support Rivers but will be ready to step up and prove his Lakers’ tenure was a fluke if given the chance. For the Bucks, it’s crucial they avoid such a scenario to maintain stability.
