[Saba Sports News] When the Phoenix Suns acquired Bradley Beal in the summer of 2023, it was expected they were adding another elite scorer and ball-handler. Beal, a three-time All-Star, had long been one of the top scoring talents in the Eastern Conference.
Under coach Mike Budenholzer, however, Beal has proven he’s more than just a scorer. Early in the season, he has emerged as one of the Suns’ most dependable defenders and is focusing on the finer details that championship teams need.
After the Suns’ 103-97 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, Grayson Allen highlighted how Beal is reshaping his image and contributions.
“Brad does a ton of the little things,” Allen said. “He hustles, makes extra plays, drives. People know him as a 30-point scorer, but he does so many small things that help us be a winning team. He’s essential to our success.”
Last season, Devin Booker and Beal struggled with increased ball-handling responsibilities. Now, with Tyus Jones as the primary facilitator, Beal can focus on his game. Surrounded by offensive talent, his defensive efforts are standing out.
At 31, it’s rare for a star to change perceptions about their play. But after years with a middling Washington team, Beal has an opportunity to redefine his role. If he helps the Suns make a deep playoff run or reach the NBA Finals, his complete skill set could gain greater recognition.
The Suns are getting more from Beal than anticipated, which could make all the difference as the season progresses.
