[Saba Sports News] Badminton is a highly popular
sport among sports enthusiasts due to its numerous health benefits. While some
perceive badminton as a safe sport compared to contact sports like football or
basketball, it is important to note that badminton can still pose risks to our
eyes. In fact, badminton has been identified as the leading cause of
sports-related blindness. Eye injuries in badminton usually occur when a
shuttlecock strikes the eye. Despite its lightweight nature, shuttlecocks can
travel at high speeds and have small dimensions. Unlike a basketball or
football that may disperse the impact with the surrounding orbital bones, most
of the kinetic energy of a shuttlecock is absorbed by the eyeball.
Consequently, being struck by a shuttlecock can result in serious consequences.
Additionally, accidents involving flying rackets can also occur during matches.
A racket hitting the eye with significant force can lead to orbital fractures,
eyeball rupture, and other severe injuries. Therefore, the editor believes that
wearing protective eyewear is necessary when playing badminton.
