[Saba Sports News] Michael Neser has been brought back into the Australian Test squad for the upcoming series in New Zealand. With two Test and four ODI appearances for Australia to his name, Neser’s last Test outing was in December 2022.
At 33, Neser’s inclusion has been influenced by the anticipated bowler-friendly pitches in New Zealand. His selection was further facilitated by injuries to Lance Morris during the West Indies ODI series and Jhye Richardson’s six-week sidelining due to a side strain.
Matt Renshaw keeps his place in the squad as the reserve batsman, following David Warner’s retirement.
George Bailey, the chair of the selection panel, commended Neser’s consistent performance and highlighted the importance of the series for World Test Championship points. “Michael Neser’s return to the squad is well-deserved, considering his form and the expected conditions in New Zealand. This series is crucial for accumulating WTC points against a formidable home team,” Bailey remarked.
This series marks Australia’s first Test tour to New Zealand since 2016, starting on February 29.
The squad features Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vice-captain), and Mitchell Starc.
