[Saba Sports News] Angelo Mathews has been recalled to the Sri Lankan squad for the forthcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe at home. The 36-year-old, who last played a T20I for Sri Lanka in 2021, returns to the team in another World Cup year, echoing his inclusion in the recent ODI World Cup. Mathews, initially out of the 50-over format since 2021, re-entered the squad as an injury replacement.
The series marks a new leadership era with Wanindu Hasaranga assuming the role of full-time T20I captain for Sri Lanka, and Charith Asalanka serving as vice-captain, continuing his role from the ODI team. The squad welcomes back several players, including Nuwan Thushara and Akila Dananjaya.
Thushara, after a modest start to his career, has shown considerable improvement in domestic cricket and global franchise leagues, recently joining Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL Auction.
Dananjaya’s return strengthens Sri Lanka’s spin department, vital for the upcoming World Cup in the West Indies and USA. Kamindu Mendis, known for his ambidextrous all-round abilities, also makes a comeback. However, Dunith Wellalage and Chamika Karunaratne have been omitted.
Pathum Nissanka’s inclusion hinges on passing a fitness test due to injury concerns.
The squad features Wanindu Hasaranga (captain), Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Janith Perera, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka (conditional on fitness), Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, and Akila Dananjaya.
