[Saba Sports News] For any young basketball player, reaching the NBA requires more than just talent and hard work; it takes a bit of luck and maybe even some divine intervention.
Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George believes he needed a higher power’s help to achieve his dream of playing in the world’s premier basketball league. On the latest episode of Podcast P with Paul George, presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment, George shared a story from his teenage years when he decided to order some “holy water” he saw advertised on TV, hoping it might boost his chances of making it to the NBA.
“I don’t think my parents even know this story,” George admitted. “I was probably 15 or 16 when I saw this infomercial with people claiming to be blessed by this holy water. I thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’ So I ordered it. Two weeks later, I got this little sample, and I remember praying and sprinkling the water on myself. I prayed, ‘I just want to be an NBA player. I want to be the best basketball player I can be.’ And well, it’s safe to say it worked.”
Whether or not the holy water had any real effect, George’s path to NBA stardom certainly took off. Today, he’s one of the most recognizable faces in the basketball world and has earned a place among the highest-paid players in the league’s history.
However, George’s journey is far from over. Now with the Philadelphia 76ers, after a stint with his hometown Los Angeles Clippers, he faces the challenge of helping his new team break through in the playoffs. Despite the 76ers’ consistent success in the Eastern Conference since 2017-18, they’ve struggled to make a deep postseason run. George hopes to be the missing piece that finally pushes the team over the top.
With the depth at every position, George, as the third option alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, won’t face the same pressure he did with the Clippers. The big question remains: can the 76ers finally overcome their playoff woes and reach the NBA Finals with George on board?
