[Saba Sports News] Afghanistan unveiled their formidable squad for the upcoming one-off Test against Sri Lanka, set to commence on February 2 at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club.
Led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, the squad boasts a balanced composition with six batters and as many bowlers, complemented by two all-rounders and wicketkeepers apiece.
In the batting lineup, 35-year-old veteran Noor Ali Zadran marks a significant return to the senior men’s squad, joining familiar faces Rahmat Shah, Ibrahim Zadran and Nasir Jamal. Additionally, uncapped Baheer Shah earns his spot in the squad, marking a potential debut opportunity.
Two less experienced all-rounders, Abdul Malik and Nijat Masood, both 25 years old, have secured their places in the 16-member squad. Meanwhile, Ikram Alikhil, stepping in for Afzar Zazai, and uncapped Mohammad Ishaq are set to take charge behind the stumps as wicket-keepers.
The bowling department sees the inclusion of young left-arm orthodox spinner Zia-ur-Rehman, eager to make his Test debut, alongside Mohammad Saleem Safi and uncapped player Naveed Zadran. Leading the bowling unit are Qais Ahmad, Zahir Khan and Yamin Ahmadzai.
Notable exclusions from the Afghanistan Test team include Amir Hamza and Karim Janat, alongside star player Rashid Khan, who continues to recover from back surgery post the ODI World Cup 2023.
